In the UK, 2,900 employees at 61 companies tested the\u00a0four-day workweek<\/b>\u00a0for six months instead of five for the same salary, with somewhat encouraging results. This is the largest experiment in the world conducted on the subject, which confirms some hypotheses already advanced in previous studies: those who reduce working hours reconcile private and professional life better, improve health and produce the same. At the end of the test, which began in June and ended in December 2022, most of the companies said they wanted to keep this model.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Short week, the 100:80:100 model<\/h2>

The study was coordinated by the non-profit organization\u00a04 Day Week Global<\/b>: the NGO has extended the experiment of\u00a0Perpetual Guardian<\/b>, a New Zealand company with\u00a0240 employees<\/b>\u00a0who have successfully adopted the short working week since 2018. The initiative foresees that in each participating country a group of companies participate in a 6-month pilot project based on the\u00a0100:80:100 model<\/b>. In practice, 100% of the salary to employees who will work 80% of the scheduled hours (usually 32) and are committed to achieving the\u00a0same results<\/b>\u00a0that would be achieved by working five days a week.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Before starting the test, the companies were\u00a0prepared for two months<\/b>\u00a0with workshops, mentoring and coaching sessions. Companies of different sectors and sizes were given the possibility of choosing how to reduce the total number of hours. The highest odds opted for\u00a0Friday off<\/b>.<\/p>

The\u00a0report findings<\/b>\u00a0draw on the companies\u2019 administered data, employee survey data, along with a series of interviews conducted during the pilot period, providing metrics at baseline, mid and at the end of the process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Less stress and better work-life balance<\/h2>

Before and after data show that at the end of the journey, 39% of employees were\u00a0less stressed<\/b>\u00a0and 71% had reduced levels of burnout. Similarly, levels of\u00a0anxiety<\/b>,\u00a0fatigue<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0sleep problems<\/b>\u00a0decreased, while mental and physical health improved.\u00a0\u201cThose who have a short work week \u2013 explain from\u00a0Boston College<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 tend to use the third day off for\u00a0doctor\u2019s appointments or other errands<\/b>\u00a0that would otherwise have to be concentrated in one working day\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

For more than half of the employees it was easier\u00a0to reconcile work with social and family life<\/b>. A balance that Italy is trying to build also with the new rules on parental leave.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The number of\u00a0employees who left the participating companies<\/b>\u00a0also decreased significantly, recording a 57% drop during the trial period.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Free time is priceless<\/h2>

You have no idea how much money we will be able to save for child care\u201d<\/em>. This is the comment of a nonprofit employee and this is not an isolated case. According to the\u00a0Guardian<\/b>, many British families have found that working full-time saves less money than working part-time.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

For many, the positive effects of a four-day workweek were\u00a0worth more than their weight in money<\/b>. 15% of employees said that\u00a0no amount of money<\/b>\u00a0would induce them to agree to a five-day schedule beyond the four days a week they were now accustomed to.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nine out of ten companies keep the week short<\/h2>

A sobering figure concerns the\u00a0turnover<\/b>\u00a0of companies, which remained substantially unchanged, with an\u00a0average increase of 1.4%<\/b>. To get a clearer picture of the impact of shorter working hours on productivity, the researchers compared the revenue of the six-month trial with a similar period in previous years, finding an average\u00a035% increase in revenue. %<\/b>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The figure, at least in Europe, is confirmed by the latest\u00a0OECD<\/b>\u00a0statistics. Western European countries that work fewer hours per year (Germany<\/b>,\u00a0Denmark<\/b>,\u00a0Austria<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Switzerland<\/b>) have higher productivity rates.<\/p>

Also for this reason, it is assumed that of the 61 companies that participated,\u00a056 are continuing<\/b>\u00a0with the four working days a week (92%).
